Tips for doing your own home maintenance and repair

Care and Cleaning of Cook Tops

I think probably my least favorite house cleaning job after the bathroom is the kitchen.  The grease and dirt is pretty foul, but keeping the food prep areas and the cooking surfaces clean is really key to maintaining a healthy environment.

Today I would like to offer a few pointers to caring for and cleaning your range. Porcelain enamel is very durable and is used in most conventional cook tops.  You can set hot pans on it, but cold items or cold liquids should not be allowed to come in contact with it. When spills occur whip them up immediately.

Today the side and front of the cook top may be made of synthetic enamel instead of porcelain so they will be more fragile easily damaged by household cleaners and acids from fruit and vegetables.

When cleaning your cook top never use scouring powder or abrasive pads. Instead use plastic or nylon pads. You can purchase appliance wax to use on the painted surfaces for protection and ease of cleaning, but it does not need to be used on the porcelain enamel surface. Once the hot surfaces of the cook top have cooled wash them with soap and warm water. For difficult stains or spots a mixture of water and baking soda can be used. Always rinse well and wipe dry.
